ABOUT

About the Launceston and North East Region

Tasmania is forecast to add 35,841 people by 2046. Launceston and North East holds the second highest share of Tasmania's SA4s, at 20.5% of this growth.

This region sits in the north-east of Tasmania, where the Kanamaluka/Tamar River meets the city. Launceston is surrounded by some of the state's top attractions, including Cataract Gorge, City Park, the Sports Stadium, and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, all close to the city centre.

Launceston is the main city in the region, offering affordable housing, a high quality of life, access to natural environments and employment opportunities in health care, retail and construction.

The SA4 includes several regional and coastal towns, including St Helens, Scamander, George Town, Beauty Point, Beaconsfield, Bridport and Scottsdale, where tourism, agriculture and port-related activities are key drivers of the local economy.

About the Launceston and North East Region

Key Findings

The region is forecast to pass 160,000 residents by 2036, the same point at which Tasmania's population surpasses 610,000. By 2046, the population reaches 162,075, an increase of 7,349 since 2021.

  • The largest growth is in the Launceston SA2, which increases by almost 4,000 people to 2046, just over half of the SA4's total growth. This occurs along two growth fronts: Waverley - St Leonards, and Newham - Mayfield.
  • There is significant growth in the northern and south-eastern corridors of Launceston city, with sites such as Cedar Grove Estate, Lilydale Estate and the Alanvale Housing Plan the major contributors.
  • Legana and Hadspen - Carrick are major growth areas outside the Launceston LGA, benefiting from proximity to the Launceston CBD and the availability of serviced land for future development.
  • Some areas see population decline towards the end of the forecast period, predominantly regional living areas with few new projects and an ageing population, such as Northern Midlands, Scottsdale - Bridport, Perth - Evandale, Longford and Flinders Island.
