Understanding population data

The most comprehensive population count available in Australia is derived from the Population and Household Census conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, every 5 years. It is an official count of the population and dwellings, and collects details of age, sex and other characteristics of the population. The last census was conducted on 7 August 2001 and was the 14th national census for Australia. The next census will be conducted on 8 August 2006.

Census statistics are used as the basis for estimating the population at national, State and local government levels, for electoral purposes and the distribution of government funds. They are used by individuals and organizations in the public and private sectors for planning, administration, research and decision making.

Populations are estimated in various ways. It is important to understand how a population has been derived when you are using the data.

The three main population types used in Australia are:

  1. Enumerated (Census) Population;
  2. Estimated Resident Population, and;
  3. Usual Resident Population.
